Streamline Packaging & Case Handling With Automated Checkweighing

Automating Case Weighing to Improve Efficiency and Reduce Overhead

One of our partners in herbicide production relied on a fully manual case weighing process that required several employees to move boxes, verify weights, enter data, and seal cases by hand. The workflow was slow and inconsistent, and there was no reliable way to check case weights. This often led to rework, bottlenecks, and extra labor that took time away from other important tasks. Manual data entry into the PLC also increased the chance of errors and slowed down production.

To streamline the process and improve accuracy, our team gathered key details about their current workflow and ideal end state. With important requirements such as line speed, package size, and weight tolerances documented, we collaborated with Mettler Toledo to create an in-motion checkweigher configuration that would best support the partner’s operation. The final system included an in-motion checkweigher, automated conveyor drives, and a taping system to seal cases as they moved through the line. It also connected directly to our partner’s PLC, allowing weight and transaction data to pass seamlessly into their in-house ERP system.

With the new automated system in place, cases now run across the checkweigher at line speed and are automatically confirmed against preset tolerances. Out-of-spec cases are redirected for correction without stopping production. The automated workflow reduced the number of employees needed at the line and allowed team members to focus on higher-value work elsewhere in the plant.

After installation, our partner saw faster throughput, improved accuracy, and a more consistent weighing process. The automated system removed unnecessary manual steps, reduced labor requirements, and helped create a more efficient and dependable workflow.

The new solution now provides our partner with a reliable, long-term approach to case weighing that improves accuracy, saves time, and keeps production running smoothly.
