Rail Scales

RAIL SCALES

Rail scales tend to be one of the largest and most crucial scale purchases a business makes. In many cases, it is vital to your ongoing productivity and profitability. Given these factors, the dependability, accuracy, and ability to maintain a rail scale becomes critical when selecting the right product.

System Scale is proud to offer railscales with a best in industry 10 Year Warranty. These scales, featuring PDX™ technology, include lightning protection with no junction box.

Whether it be static rail cars, weighing-in-motion, or a truck/rail combo scale, System Scale can work with you to find the right heavy duty weighing solution to keep your business moving. We offer a number of solutions that accommodate different axle types and a wide variety of rail car sizes, all with the ability to weigh without coming to a complete stop via a coupled-in-motion rail scale.

Rail Scales

There are two main types of rail scales available, each of which requires site preparation, scale foundation / approaches, and track work to insure a successful installation. System Scale can help you evaluate your needs and determine the right scale for your project.

With a static scale, the rail car is positioned onto the scale for weighing. The configuration for this type of scale is referred to as a “split platform design.” Because the railcars are long, manufacturers provide two smaller scales with a concrete dead section between the scales. The railcar is moved into the correct position with one set of wheels on one scale and the second set of wheels on the other scale. Both scales are summed together to obtain the accurate weight of the rail car.

If you’re interested in a static scale, it’s important to know your longest and shortest rail cars to ensure all sizes of cars will fit onto the scale.

An in-motion scale is the second type of rail scale we offer. With this type of scale, the car is not uncoupled like a static scale, but instead the rail cars are coupled and move at approximately 5 MPH across the scale. These in-motion scales have sophisticated controllers to capture the train’s exact speed, length, and weight while the cars are moving.

In-motion scales help to eliminate the costs and hazards of uncoupling and positioning each car for weighing.

The Power Of PDXTM Technology

The revolutionary PDX™ load cell technology has helped to make rail scales abundantly more resistant, reliable, efficient, and accurate. These load cells also provide a weather-proof body, as well as continuous monitoring, for even greater protection.

The PDX™ load cells use an “always on” predictive diagnostic technology that ensures rail scales are always operating at peak efficiency and performance. This unique technology sends real-time alerts for any potential issues your scales may be experiencing:

  • Weighing errors
  • Overloading
  • Environmental conditions
  • Network health
  • Enclosure integrity

Chunky and problematic junction boxes are a thing of the past with the POWERCELL PDX™ load cell, which rids scales of issues like debris build-up, cables, and weather and environmental problems that vehicle scales are prone to experiencing. By eliminating the junction box and connecting the PDX™ load cells to each other via a simple network, the junction box is safer and exposed to fewer threats. Electrical components are hermetically sealed and safely encased, ensuring the critical components are protected from all outside environmental threats.

Lightning strikes can also be a major issue for vehicle scales, as they pose a large risk. But thanks to PDX™ technology and StrikeShield™, lightning strike issues that can cause significant damage are now eliminated. Each load cell includes surge protection and a single-point ground that work together to stop lightning strikes from happening in the first place.
